Getting to winter time hear in Sweden but looking out the window you wouldn’t know it. Looking more like september than late november. Global warming might seem like a great thing from this standpoint, but the more energy the atmosphere holds the more severe the weather can be.
We have to understand enough to realize, like Einstein did long before everyone else, that eating a lot of meat actually is much worse than driving a SUV to the airport and flying to work. 51% of all green house gasses is from live-stock. Almost 5 football fields of rainforest is cleared every second to make room for live-stock doubling the effect on the environment.
That’s my rant for the month, but just as with everything else we can’t do better until we understand better. This month I am inspired to show you something that will immediately clean up the environment between your ears. Will do wonders there too;-)
Your Life is a Masterpiece, discover it!
Quote of the month
" Understand enough to stop taking your thinking seriously when you're in a low state of mind and your life will improve immediately. "
- Anders Haglund
Understanding the soundtrack of your life?
As I was on a flight home from my last event I was relaxing by watching a movie on my iPad. As the flight attendant approaches with her food cart I remove my head phones to ask for some water. As I drink the water I have a moment where I am watching the movie without the sound. Which as you all know is very different experience. Not the same at all. Not as engaging. Simply not as good.
But one thing actually affected me more. A ”baddie” jumps out without warning and decks the hero. Caught me completely by surprise and almost had me jumping in my seat. Had to rewind and watch again with my head phones on and it wasn’t only the fact that I now new what was going to happen that made it different. Turns out the music was warning anybody with the sound on that something bad was about to happen.
Not that I didn’t know before that all directors use music and sound to tell the story. As some poor, innocent schmuck is going to open a door the music says something about the murderer lying in wait behind it. You noticed, right? It gets more ominous sounding by each step in the wrong direction. You almost want to cry out to the actor: Don’t you hear the music!? Don’t go there!
Now, you might be wondering what this has got to do with living our lives in a better way, but bear with me a little longer. My insight as I reflected on this in my seat was that we might not be actors in big budget movies, but we still do have a sort of background music to our everyday lives. It has the same ebb and flow of dolce and fortissimo, allegro and dolorous… That’s about as far as my knowledge of musical terms go, but I hope you get my point here.
Not that it comes to us as music per se. Rather, it comes to us as feelings. Strong, weak, sad, happy etc. If you don’t understand what they are trying to say there is a pretty fair chance that you open doors that should have remained shut. Or miss opening some that would have led to wonderful opportunities. It’s like having an in with the director of your movie.
The problem is that most us have not been taught how to listen. Nor have we been told about understanding what the feeling is trying to tell us. This leads us astray and makes life so much harder than it needs to be. Because it’s so easy to think that our feelings are saying something about our past, future or what we should and should not do. But they can’t. In the same way your thermometer can’t tell you anything about what time it is.
The only thing your feelings can tell you about is the quality of your thinking in the moment. That’s the reason you can be home alone and all of a sudden get anxious about ”something”. Or get elated. Pick any feeling and it will still follow your thinking and not your circumstances. As soon as your thinking changes your feelings change, regardless of what’s going on around you. If somebody happens to be sitting next to you they will have their own ”music” as a soundtrack to their movie.
So, when you are stressed that feeling is telling you nothing about how much you have to do. It only tells you that you are having stressful thinking that your taking seriously. When you are worried or anxious that feeling says nothing about how secure the world is. It only says that you’re taking insecure thinking seriously. Same thing when you have a ”bad” feeling about something. It doesn’t tell you if you should or shouldn’t do something. It only tells you that you’re not clear minded enough to make a informed decision.
Are you seeing something new here yet? If so, I know from experience that you will start having a nicer feeling more often. Not to mention that you can use the soundtrack of your life to navigate all the challenges, problems and opportunities that your thinking presents you with. You start understanding what it’s trying to tell you and you automatically start doing better. You see when to open a door and when to stop taking your thinking seriously and let it stay closed.
Might sound simple and it is. However, it’s not easy. Especially when the music gets really loud in your head and feelings are stronger. But any time you catch yourself, the thinking changes on its own and you’re right back in the flow of life. Deep implications that will drag the corners of your mouth upward, have the twinkle back in your eyes and put the spring back in your step. Hope quite simply. There is nothing better…
