A bit late in sending out this coaching letter but hopefully it is worth the wait:-) Being successful is not about being perfect but about getting back on the path as soon as you notice it.
So back to a nice, green salad and other good stuff if you happened to wolf down some fast food yesterday. Go for a walk or run after ”not having time” for a while. Get out there and meet some customers the day after being down and not feeling like it.
Please see how natural it is to both block our potential (losing hope) and letting it flow freely again (finding hope again). At heart we are a hopeful species and evolved to bounce back from even the toughest of times. Therefore, my hope is that this monthly letter reaches you at the right time to spark some of that hope and reconnect to the energy needed to make progress on YOUR dreams…
Your Life is a Masterpiece, discover it!
Quote of the month
" There comes a point where the mind takes a higher plane of knowledge, but can never prove how it got there. All great discoveries have involved such a leap. "
- Albert Einstein
Superhero in disguise?
I recently watched a documentary on the legendary David Bowie. He always seemed larger than life somehow so, even though we all know that we all are ”only” human, it came as a bit of a surprise to me that he was desperately shy. Almost impossible to think of David Bowie a shrinking violet. What really had my attention was when he said: I overcome my debilitating shyness by creating a role to play. Being Ziggy Stardust his shyness disappeared in a puff of imaginary smoke, and he could be as extrovert and outgoing as he was.
And, he’s not an isolated example of this. A lot of our most famous stars suffer from the same affliction in private but you don’t even see a hint of it on stage or in front of a camera. One of today’s biggest icons, Beyoncé, said that she was so insecure and has such performance anxiety that she wouldn’t even dream of getting up in front of thousands of people without imagining pretending to be her alter ego ”Sasha Fierce”. Apparently Sasha can, but Beyoncé can’t. Ziggy but not David.
Fascinating, right? When I was younger and dreaming of becoming a golf pro I could hit shots that ”I couldn’t” when I pretended to be on of my heroes. Like Seve Ballesteros, Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus. Both David, and Beyoncé, you and I understand that it’s still us performing, so why does it make such a difference? Once we take a look towards the principles behind life the answer stands out in relief to a background of theories. Because since we all live in the experience of our thinking what we are not thinking can’t be in our way. Only what we do think about and take seriously can become the highest security prison for us. Because bars made of imagination is impossible to think our way out of.
Seeing the potential here might lead you on quest to find an alter ego from your childhood that dared to do anything. A superhero or an idol that had you sing your heart out, stand up for yourself or score an amazing goal. Why not, right? If it’s a tool that worked for Bowie and QueenB? Well, I still don’t think that it’s a sustainable solution because it is built on a faulty premise and an innocent misunderstanding. It’s not the role that works – it’s you!
In much the same way that placebo works because we have the potential to heal and not because we are ”fooled” to believe we can, Bowie, Beyoncé and ourselves can perform wonderfully because we actually have that abiltiy. Not because we trick ourselves by pretending to be someone else. It’s that we stop taking our insecure, anxious, stressful and worried thinking seriously that unblocks our innate potential. Not the adding of the role or positive, carefree thinking that makes it possible.
Are you with me on this subtle, but oh so crucial, difference that I’m pointing to here? The key is to stop looking at what you think, how you think and behave and instead start looking towards the potential behind life and the unlimited possibilities that we can access there. All that’s needed is that you see the bars that keep them locked up for what they are. Entirely made up of thought and that as soon as you stop taking them seriously you can rock it like Ziggy and be as fierce as Sasha. Understanding replaces suspicion and prejudice, eyes start to glitter, voices are heard, difficulties are overcome and personal records are broken…
All without anything new having to be added. It’s all built in and part of our default setting. Just waiting to be reset by taking a look towards the potential behind life. A moment of consciousness is all it takes and the imaginary prison bars in our mind dissolve into flowing thought. All of a sudden we realize how natural it is doing our best and have fun doing it.
Like learning to walk. Big smile when our shaky legs keep us up. A good cry when we fall on our behinds. Either way we take the next step until… All without having to play a role, be it as spectacular as Ziggy or as ”in your face” as Sasha. Your humaness is more than enough and what’s actually making it work. The role just obscures the fact that regular old you is actually better than any role you can dream up..
This is one of the most inspiring and uplifting books that I have read in a long time. The message is crystal clear and you can feel that it’s coming from the heart of the authors. All I can do is hope that all you readers not only buy it, but that you read it… again and again…
