Is there more to you than meets even your eye?
This letter is written following a very different kind of week. Managed to stick a knife through my forearm. Not in the David Blaine kind of way doing a magic trick, but in the real life painful kind of way. One hundredth of a second and the damage was done. I can’t even count the number of times my dad has told me to only use tools away from the body. And still, as I was cutting off cable-ties one of them wouldn’t break off just from twisting the knife, so I pulled slightly to cut it.
It released much the same way as when you have a tug-of-war and one side suddenly just lets go of the rope. The knife came hurtling up like a cobra strike and went straight through my left forearm where it cut off tendons, nerves, muscles and main artery. I knew immediately that this was serious and as we luckily live only minutes away from the hospital I got under medical care very fast. Skilled hand surgeons sew it all back together and now all that’s needed is time to heal. Ten full weeks in a cast to be exact so much of this summers vacation activities will have to be changed.
What fascinates me when I’m sitting here learning to dictate the coaching letter rather than using the keyboard, is that all this healing is going on without me having to do anything. Nerves grow and find their counterparts. Tendons are sewn together and become whole again. The food I eat is divided into ever smaller parts and being transported out to the place of injury as building blocks. Spend a little time with thoughts about this and you’ll soon be in awe about how it all works.
Another thing that strikes me is that there’s nothing much I can do to speed up the recovery process. All I can do is to remove whatever obstacles that might get in the way of it. Most of it is already done by the doctors as they cleaned and disinfected the wound. My part is to put some good nutrition in my mouth that replenish the the supply of building blocks, get plenty of rest and make sure that I don’t hurt the process by slamming the arm into anything before it’s fit for fight again. Move the fingers as much as is possible and keep the rest of the body moving naturally.
The mind works much the same. Just as the healing process, our ability to do our best, having fun while doing and bouncing back from difficulties is innate. You don’t have to add anything to access your best and perform to your potential. However you do need to practice to make your best lead to better results. Or as I say to the athletes that I coach: You don’t practice to feel better, your practice to get better!
Considering that this is pretty much diametrically opposed to how most people, if they’re honest, think that we work maybe it’s good if I illustrated by a story. I had a female teacher at the University who started our first class by saying: I want all of you to know that I have already given you an A+ (The highest grade). My job, and yours, is to make sure that you keep it by the end of the semester. Quite a bit different from walking into the classroom and saying that everybody starts from scratch and you have to work hard and prove yourself to earn your final grade, don’t you think?
There is something incredibly hopeful about realizing that it works the same way in both body and mind. We start with an amazing power to heal streaming through us. It orchestrates 50 billion cells and has them talking to each other and knowing what to do. Without even being able to see each other they work as a gigantic team to ward off any threat to our well-being. As long as it hasn’t gone to far it is amazing what we can naturally recover from.
And our mind is no different. We have an unlimited creative ability to think thoughts and use our mind. All we need is a bit of understanding so we don’t get in the way of it. Seeing that focus, for example, is not something we have to work at. It is rather something that is automatically there in the same instance that we stop taking distracting thoughts seriously. Just as confidence is just the absence of insecure thinking taken seriously. Old hurts and injustices start healing the same moment we don’t entertain them in our minds. A+ is our starting point and all we can ever do is get in the way of it.
As opposed to the body, where being sedentary, eating junk food and having wounds that haven’t been cleaned and disinfected properly, is how we get in the way – we get in the way of our mental immune system by getting caught up in trying to fix our thinking, rather than returning to doing what is in front of us in a calm and focused manner. I am well aware that this might sound oversimplistic but it is so worth it when you understand that you already have all that you need. Simply take a break from your busy mind and it gives you a surplus of time to practice what do you want to get good at that is not in innate… When would now be a good time to start?
